6. Black History Month

Our brief was to create a striking backdrop for the school hall as part of Black History Month, which would then become a permanent feature. We explored the subject of ‘freedom’ in a set of four banners : freedom from want, freedom from fear, freedom of faith and freedom of expression.

We supplied the teachers with lesson plans and preparatory materials, to enable them to produce preliminary designs in class. We then ran workshops, helping the children to turn their designs into fabric collage pieces, which we later assembled to form the finished artworks.
